FAA’s pilot eligibility requirements
To become a pilot, you must meet the FAA’s pilot eligibility requirements. You must have at least three years of aviation experience and have trained with a licensed commercial flight instructor (CFI). You must have at least 400 hours of flight time and have the knowledge and skills necessary to fly certain aircraft. The FAA also has pilot eligibility requirements for airline transport pilots. To become an airline pilot, you must pass a three-part test: a knowledge examination (computerized multiple-choice) and a practical test administered by a Designated Pilot Examiner or FAA inspector.
If you are an active military member, you may not need to complete the medical requirements to become a commercial pilot.
